iNavis According to the norwegian model
The opening of the Maritime Innovation Center iNavis, one of the more active incubators in Croatia preceded by the establishment of the company CroNoMar, which manages the innovation part of the iNavis center.
As Sibenik company in the norwegian ownership, CroNoMar was established in 2009, and through the incubator supports innovative activities of networking and services associated with the development of competitiveness towards foreign markets. The Norwegian King and Queen visited Center in 2011 and in 2012 the area of iNavis innovation incubator was open. This is an investment of about 30 million kuna.
Navis is the result of cooperation between the City of Sibenik and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The city has provided the location, prepared documentation for the adoption and adaptation of spatial plans and the reconstruction itself, created documents in order to obtain incentives from various funds and invested in the renovation of the building. Norwegian Ministry has secured financial support for the realization of the project, as well as transfer of know-how through company CroNoMar.
The total investment was 30 million kuna. The opening of iNavis preceded by the transfer of ownership of the former military barracks from the Government to the City of Sibenik and defining the terms of management and the usage of the Centre in which beside this incubator regional development agency is located and the area for one university study is in process of refurbishing.
Within the innovation incubator of iNavis Centre there are 12 companies related to Marine/Maritime sector, from shipbuilding, transport, energy, propulsion machinery, ICT technologies, innovation, maritime research, and service providing companies such as bookkeeping and IT companies.
"Since all the companies are different, incubator services are tailored to each individual company. We are offering to the incubated companies networking, access to the new markets, in short all possible assistance. For example, in 2014 we have applied Project Internationalization of business as part of the program Poduzetnički impuls which was approved so part of the companies from the incubator in August this year we will take to the international Fair of aquaculture and fisheries Aquanor in Trondheim with aim of connecting them with potential partners at the international markets. During the fair there will be organized and a visit to the Norwegian companies that may be the potential partners. This is the largest fair of this kind that brings together 50,000 visitors and is held every two years, "Ana Zajc said, manager of the innovation incubator of iNavis Center and senior project consultant for CroNoMar.
Ana Zajc say that the daily operations of the incubator and CroNoMar are based on the transfer of knowledge, technologies and business development, and thus favours also the building of iNavis Centre where they are located and which points to its planned development in the future.
As far as the incubation period, Zajc clarifies that iNavis is not an typical incubator and that is organized and operates according to the model of Norwegian best practice.
Malvin Villaba, director of CroNoMar, comes to Šibenik at least once a month. Also he is the director of Leiv Eiriksson Nyskaping from Trondheim already for 18 years. Previously, he was one of the youngest director of the Norwegian Institute for Marine Research. He is dealing with Business development within the marine/maritime sector more than 20 years.
"Our incubator Leiv Eiriksson Nyskaping on average capacitate ten new companies on yearly basics. Following this success, we wanted to get out of the hard framework and provide to Croatian entrepreneurs slightly different service and support to which they are not used to. Therefore, even the incubation period has not been determined, but the practice is that the company leaves the incubator only when it is “mature” enough. We offer to the companies services from Norwegian consultants, that we are not charging at the incubator, and it is well known that Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world. We have a basic rental price, but the company does not only get the space in the incubator, but also the price includes a wide range of services available to them, "explains Director CroNoMar.
As we speak, he cites the example of one start-up company from their incubators dealing with engineering in shipbuilding. “That means that they have reached competitiveness even in something where Croatian companies are perceived as non-competitive. Croatian companies can be competitive also in high technologies, they just need to “fight” and get closer to foreign companies and present them their possibilities. We enable that and that is why we are different than others. With a small start-up companies, we managed to get a job for big Norwegian company, "explains Malvin Villabo.
In Norway, he say, there is a great demand for products and services on steel basics and engineering in this part of the industry is particularly wanted. His wish is to present to the Norwegians the opportunities which they have within Croatia and a higher level of service than the finished product, already on fair at Norway next summer, but also through daily business of CroNoMar.
"In the world there is a trend of encouraging the universities, meaning their technology transfer offices. It is considered that the development of technology at universities will channel to the users in the industry. This approach is in one part incorrect. Often these solutions are not acceptable to the business community because they are not competitive and cost-effective. In Croatia, as in many other countries, the pat shall start from linking industry and the academic sector, where the results of university centres will be based on the actual needs of the industry, "warns Villabo.
And CroNoMar, he points out, does exactly that: own business is based on connecting academia, industry needs and entrepreneurs. "Through definition of potential projects and their shortcomings we are trying to remove these lacks, whatever if it is lack of market, lack of technology or funding, and all with aim that product or service becomes competitive. CroNoMar search intensive for new projects connected to the marine and maritime sector.
Projects carried out through CroNoMar enables stable constant, but also new jobs in environment where they are implemented. Innovation Incubator of iNavis Centre distinguished from others also because it doesn’t have classical fund for acceleration, but, depending on the abilities and shortcomings of the company, its products or services, CroNoMar can be a partner, a financial partner or something like that.
From January 2013 CroNoMar is self-financed through projects that implements and is self-sustainable. Until then, it was financially supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ", he clarifies.
Mentors are four Sibenik employees of CroNoMar and available Leiv Eiriksson Nyskapinga experts in Norway.
At first, the owners of CroNoMar were SIVA, Norwegian corporation for industrial development, SINTEF, Foundation for technological and industrial research, and Leiv Eiriksson Nyskaping incubator from Trondheim, and since it is a custom that the government of Kingdom of Norway is “leaving” the ownership in favour of the real sector, a few months ago ownership of CroNoMar has been taken over by above mentioned incubator, one of the extremely successful among those who are training the entrepreneurs and small Norwegian company Predichem.
CroNoMar was from establishment directed to projects that will function for years. Thus, already in 2009, no matter what the innovation incubator did not jet exist, was signed the first commercial contract to build one catamaran with the intention of building 15, and so far 32 have been produced and delivered.
"It took us a year to deliver the first, but from then until the end of 2014 we have delivered more than 30 vessels. We have signed contracts for another ten such catamarans. These vessels are already under construction and will be delivered by the end of June this year. Several contracts for the construction of small boats were signed in 2010. These projects took place during 2012.
A few months ago for a Norwegian client, and through CroNoMars intermediation, the large vessel at TEHNOMONT in Pula has been contracted, and recently a contract for production of bigger catamaran at NCP has been signed. It is the first vessel of this type that will be produced in Croatia – so far 15 of them were produced in China. In the largest possible part, the vessel will be equipped with products from Croatian producers, and intention is to bring it to exhibition as part of the economic mission at the Aquanor fair in August.
The total value of vessels which were exported by the end of 2014 thanks to CroNoMar was about 10 million EUR. Most of them were exported to Norway, three were exported to Saudi Arabia, and two to the UK.
"Our goal is to connect innovation incubators companies, as well as companies in the region, to the markets outside of Croatia. We have a commercial approach. Everything we do must have a market, because what is worth to have a service if no one want it. Our job is to find a market and identify its needs. The key factor in the whole process is trust, and work on mutual trust is one of the tasks CroNoMar and innovation incubator, "explains Villabo.
